What is a fjord anyway?

Saturday morning, we struck off for Roskilde, a small viking town on the edge of the Roskilde Fjord. Looking at the Fjord, we couldn't understand why it wasn't just called a bay or a sound. Emily did some googling and we discovered that a fjord is a glacially cut valley that has filled with water - basically a bay with steep sides. However, the Roskilde Fjord didn't seem very steep to me. I guess the best fjords are in Sweden and Norway.
